I like numbers in a sort of geeky way and for a while I have known about a mathematical aspect to nature that many people were not aware of…it is something called the golden ratio. Somewhat related to the golden ratio is a mathematical sequence that seems to be built into most of nature called the fibonacci sequence. I have been reading about the fibonacci numbers and discovered that they relate to nature and life and the implications of this beautiful relationship between math and nature are simply astounding.

To begin; the fibonacci sequence are number that are derived from the sum of the previous set of numbers in the sequence. This process was discovered by a 13th century Italian mathematician named Fibonacci as he was trying to figure out if there was a pattern to the rate of rabbit reproduction. Each fibonacci number is derived by adding the previous two numbers together (the numbers that are separated by the equals sign) with the exception of number one that begins the sequence. An example is 1+1=2, two being the first fibonacci number, then 1+2=3, three is the next fibonacci number, 2+3=5, etc. As we progress we find a sequence of 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55, etc. Fibonacci discovered the ratio between these number are basically the same; 1:1.60 to 1:1.64 with about a point zero four (.04) margin for variance. Where does this ratio come from? Think of length. If you have something 5 cm long and something else 10 cm long, the 10 cm object is twice as long as the 5 cm object…or, you could say the ratio between those two are 1:2, the second number being twice the first number. The ratio of 1:1.6 means the second number is about 1 2/3 the first number, whether it is length, mass, volume, etc. This is the ratio we are dealing with.

What is fascinating to me is this ratio seems to be the design baseline for many of the external layer of life in nature, in other words, where DNA is the molecular digital coding for the building blocks of life, it appears the fibonacci ratio is the template used in the structural design that is seen. Another term we see regarding the fibonacci ratio is the golden ratio (1:1.618). It had been discovered long ago that this ratio appears to be very pleasing and appealing to the eyes so artists, designers and architects have been using this ratio for centuries, thus the name.

Something just as interesting to me is the fact that the variance built in to the ratio allows for subtle variations withing the parameters to achieve enough differences of, say, facial structure so everyone doesn’t look like a bunch of Ken or Barbie dolls walking around. The variances are enough to allow individualization of every living thing for variety…and we are suppose to believe this is a result of chance…give me a break.

It would not surprise me if the twist in the spiral of the double helix, if it could be measured, would fall within the fibonacci boundaries. Randomness, or chance, can never give the complexity of design that we find in life, the complexities that we find in nature and even in the arrangement of planets in the solar system. From the sub-cellular structures defined by DNA, to the massive planets we have as solar neighbors, all have mathematically defined ratios…no…the only answer is design, and to have design, you have to have a designer and the ultimate designer is the master and the creator of the universe, the Lord Jesus Christ!

While studying some of the intricacies of the bible, I ran across some theories regarding the cause of the flood of Noah. Among the theories are a couple of popular prevailing, but opposing, theories regarding the flood. The first one is the water canopy theory1 which says the waters came from above and the second view surrounds something called the hydroplate theory2 which postulates that the waters came from below. I believe both theories are wrong…and right.

I think the bible proves both are wrong. Genesis 7:11 says: “In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, on that day all the fountains of the great deep were broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened.” (NIV). The bible clearly states that both theories took place.

I could end the blog there, but what’s the fun in that? OK, lets step off the ledge and look at what these things are about and why these folks are all nuts…(it is a little lengthy, but if you are a technical geek like me…come along) (if you don’t care about the mumbo-jumbo in the middle, scroll down the the last three paragraphs, if you must…)

Water canopy theory:

Factors Supporting the Canopy Theory1

  • Continuous forty day rain.
  • Rainbows & clouds – not mentioned in the Bible before the flood
  • Fossil plants and animals in polar regions, indicating globally uniform temperatures before the flood.
  • Tremendous decline in human life expectancy following the flood.

More supporting factors from the CreationWiki link:

Before the flood, human lifespans were approximately 10 times our current expectancy. Also, the overall size of organisms, and the productivity of ecosystems, was generally much greater before the flood than after. Various regions of the Earth now perpetually glaciated, such as Antarctica, possess fossil evidence of rich ecosystems, including fossil ferns and amphibians with skulls measuring up to one meter. Productivity in these regions could only be explained by global temperature fluctuations or continental drift.

There are other indicators of an atmospheric change resulting from the flood, such as the sudden appearance of a rainbow following the flood, and the fact that human life expectancy declined to what it is today in just the few generations after Noah. Likewise the first mention of clouds is not until after the deluge, and many believe there was no rain or clouds beforehand. However, from the Bible it is clear there were stars also visible before the flood, therefore any supposed canopy was less dense than the standard cloud cover today.

A few scriptures that seem to support this:

“And God said, ‘Let there be an expanse between the waters to separate water from water.’ So God made the expanse and separated the water under the expanse from the water above it. And it was so.”Genesis 1:6-7 (NIV)

“When I bring clouds over the earth and the bow is seen in the clouds,”Genesis 9:14 (NIV)

OK…what about the Hydroplate Theory?

The hydroplate theory introduced by Dr. Walt Brown of the Center for Scientific Creation. The hydroplate theory states that before the Global flood a massive amount of water was underneath the crust. The pressure on the water caused the plates to break and separate. The escaping water then flooded the whole earth. Because these plates were broken, moved, and affected by water, (Hydro = water) these plates are considered hydroplates.

It is believed that the preflood earth held a mass of water that surrounded the earth underneath the crust. It might have held as much as half of the water in our oceans today. This water was seemingly held in coterminous chambers forming a thin spherical shell. The shell was possibly 10 miles below the earth’s surface. Increasing pressure on the water started stretching the crust. This “stretching” created a microscopic crack which violently grew about 3 miles per second. This crack found the weakest parts of the crust and broke through them. This crack encompassed the globe in about two hours. The water was being pressured by 10 miles of rock and exploded out of the crack. This water was shot almost 20 miles into the atmosphere. This created fierce rains and even extreme hail. Some of the water shot high above the stratosphere creating ice crystals that fell in certain areas. These extreme hails buried, asphyxiated, and instantly froze many animals. This includes the frozen mammoths found today.

These fountains eroded the rock on both sides of the crack creating massive amounts of sediment all over the world. The sediment buried many animals and plants establishing the fossil record. The width was so colossal that the rock beneath was compelled upward by pressure and became the mid-oceanic ridge. Then the hydroplates slid down and away from the inclining mid-Atlantic ridge. Once the gradually advancing plates reached speeds of about 45 miles per hour they would collide, compress and buckle. The plates that buckled downward became ocean trenches and those that buckled upward became mountains. This explains why large mountain ranges are in correlation to their oceanic ridges.

This theory attempts to reduce the following seemingly different phenomena into a single cause: the sudden rupturing of subterranean chambers of water which were once within the Earth’s crust.

  • Sudden destruction of most of the life on Earth;
  • Massive changes in land morphology, including mountain formation;
  • Continental drift;
  • Unusual geologic features, such as salt domes, limestone cliffs, canyons, and others;
  • Mid-oceanic ridges and trenches; 2

Here are my conclusions about these two theories:

The canopy theory helps explain why there were no mention of clouds before the flood (Genesis 9:14 first mention)

The canopy theory helps explain the mystery of tropical types of plants found in far northern and far southern longitudes.

The canopy theory help solve the mystery of the Pterodactyls (Pterosaurs3) and the atmospheric pressures needed for them to just fly…taking off needed even more atmospheric pressure under their wings.

The canopy theory helps explain why there was no rain before the the flood.

The canopy theory helps explain the longevity of life before the flood.

OK…what about the hydroplate theory?

The hydroplate theory may help explain the sudden deaths and sudden quick freezing that fossils appeared to undergo at the time of the creature’s demise.4

The hydroplate theory helps explain the tortuous plate action it appears was required for the formation of mountain ranges and deep canyons under the oceans.

The hydroplate theory helps explain the percentage of salinity of the world’s oceans.

The combination of the hydroplate theory in conjunction with the canopy theory helps explain the apparent sudden erosive condition the seem to have caused many of the earth’s canyon and scarps, such as the Grand Canyon in Arizona and the Scablands in Washington State.

The hydroplate theory in conjunction with the canopy theory help solve many of the arguments against each theory alone. For instance; the volume of water required beneath the earth alone creates problem and the amount of atmospheric pressure and the amount of radiation blockage created by a solo canopy theory causes some concerns. Removing some of the required H2O from each theory, thus creating a balance between each makes each theory much more palatable.

It seems to me that those that are proponents of the canopy theory over any other theory do not have this verse in their bibles…“In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, on that day all the fountains of the great deep were broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened.”Genesis 7:11 (NIV)

It also seems to me that those that push the hydroplate theory as the sole explanation of the flood are also missing this verse in their bibles…“In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, on that day all the fountains of the great deep were broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened.”Genesis 7:11 (NIV) because it seems to me that God has provided His own theory…that it was waters above the earth (canopy theory fits here…) and waters below the earth (hydroplate theory fits here) that caused the flood.

I sort of think that both these camps of higher thought should get together over coffee and actually agree to read the bible as their basic, primary source of information and then discuss their different theories. If they did that, I believe there would be a new book published and coauthored by all these folks that combine their different theories and heavily lean on God’s theory from Genesis 7:11 that the water came from above and below.

4 I may have some questions about this…I am thinking out loud here…for instance; if the flood created a weird condition that suddenly and catastrophically caused these fossil remains, why are there no fossil remains of humans preserved within the same strata. There were, by many accounts, millions of people that perished in the flood…perhaps it was because the human population of the earth was concentrated between the tropic bands of the earth…then how do we explain the preserved foot prints found along side of dinosaur footprints? I tend to over-think things…as you can see…but, I still have questions…

Fibonacci numbers and life: Sequence to success.

I have been reading about the fibonacci numbers as they relate to nature and life and the implications are simply astounding. Something that wasn’t mentioned directly, but it jumped out at me is the design aspect lurking behind this sequence.

Why do we accept the Bible as the Word of God? Perhaps it is because our parents and grandparents accepted it thus and subsequently we were taught as a child to also accept it as God’s Word. That, in a nutshell, is probably why most of the people in the world accept any document or book as inspired, because of their traditions, but how can we really know it is the inspired word of God, how can we really prove the accuracy of the bible?

I accepted the bible as the inspired Word of God on spec when I was younger primarily because of the above reasons. After awhile I rejected the bible as inspired and then spent several decades demeaning and degrading the Christian God and anything related to Him, including the bible. However, after experiencing some frightening spiritual events, I reassessed my views on religion and ended up coming full circle back to where I started, viewing the Word of Our Lord with new eyes and a new intent and I soon became interested in proving the veracity of the scriptures to myself, as well as to others.

There are probably dozens of ways you can prove that the bible is inspired. For me, one place to start is the fact that Christ and the apostles quote from many of the books of the Old Testament and what they are quoting is what we are reading when we refer to those passages. This is proof that the books of the old covenant and the books of the new covenant are intrinsically linked, and all a part of the canon. Critics of the scriptures have attempted to disprove the bible using the lack of historical evidence found of the names and nations and events that the bible mentions, but in recent decades more evidence has arisen that does nothing but support the historical accuracy of the scriptures.

There have been many different methods and ways of producing evidence in support of the supernatural inspiration of the Holy Word, but the one that seems most interesting to me are the hidden codes throughout the scriptures. Some of the most technical codes that can be found beneath the surface of this holy tome are mathematical and one form of this mathematical coding is the heptatic structure built throughout the bible. Heptatic simply means relating to the number seven through the Greek root of hept1. There are overt and covert heptatic structures and codes rippling within the bible relating to the number seven that are staggering in their depth and complexity. These structures occur in over 600 passages throughout the scriptures, appearing in both the old and the new testaments.

A Russian born mathematician named Ivan Panin2 really brought to light the numerical patterns and structures of the bible. While the numerical structures within chapters and books of the scriptures may be possible to be replicated by man, what we find are sevenfold structures that spread across the spectrum of the scriptures. If you recall, the bible we hold in our hands was written by forty individuals, many with various backgrounds, over a 1600 year period in three different languages, yet they all write with a single commonality…all claiming to be inspired by the One True God. Even though the scriptures were written across the span of 16 centuries, there is a heptatic structure that is woven throughout the scriptures, with many spanning the entire bible to form a complete structure.

Mark 16:9-20 has been panned by many critic as not being inspired, as having probably been written in the second century AD. However, there is a discovery hiding under the upper layer of text. It has been revealed that these passages have a wonderful heptatic structure that was discovered by Ivan Panin and published in a book over a hundred years ago. Mark 16:9-20 has an out-of-this-world, supernatural structure built around the number seven (heptatic) and he proves that the probability of one guy (or even many, many people) coming up with these structures within the text, without divine guidance, puts it into the stupidly absurd probability range. This is only one example of one passage and the bible is full of them (the heptatic structure hidden within the genealogy of Christ in the book of Matthew is just as mind-boggling, if not more so)3. Ivan Panin spent almost fifty years identifying theses structures and codes and apparently he started his search because of his love of numbers or, who knows, maybe someone challenged him for he began his numerical trek through the scriptures as a non-believer but ended up as a christian and a champion of the faith in his own arena of science. We have to severely be in denial to reject and ignore these patterns and from just this evidence alone, to reject the bible as supernatural.

The heptatic structure is only one way the bible has be authenticated. There are many other ways that The Lord has authenticated His Word but I chose to focus only on this one and it alone should be enough to prove the authenticity of the scripture to all of us…but it’s not. I love this kind of stuff but it bores my wife to tears. Therefore, the evidence of the mathematical tapestry of the scriptures can only be enjoyed, and thus only be accepted by people interested in this technical hoodoo. The Lord anticipated this, of course, and there are many, many other ways that the veracity and authenticity of the scripture has been proven.

Not only is the bible designed to be read and understood by anyone, God told us in Proverbs that He has hidden little secret gems here and there for those who like to dig for them the excavate hidden truths and facts that do nothing but prove more and more the bible is the unalterable Word of Our Lord. Many, many truths have been found, but I believe many more are in there waiting to be discovered and I get like a kid in a candy store sometimes when I think I have found a hidden link to something elsewhere in the scriptures. So grab your shovel and lets get digging.

Proverbs 25:2[It is] the glory of God to conceal a thing: but the honour of kings [is] to search out a matter. (KJV)
